MHP sponsors Diversity Best Practices Business Session "Beyond Retention: Cures for the Retention Crisis"

Diversity Best Practices (DBP) presented its second session of the year, entitled "Beyond Retention: Cures for the Retention Crisis," on May 8, 2007 at The McGraw-Hill Companies headquarters in New York City. The informative and interactive session took place before an audience of 60 attendees and was led by Tyronne Stoudemire of Hewitt Associates. The day-long session kicked-off with an energizing speech from Harold McGraw III, chairman, president and CEO, who discussed the three necessary components to fostering inclusion and relationships: growth, purpose and passion. Mr. McGraw encouraged participants to broaden their purpose and then live and work toward that purpose. "You have to be able to confirm your focus and passion," he said. "Passion is contagious."

The Thomas C. Giordano Middle School/MS 45 Partnership

When McGraw-Hill Education's Senior Vice President and former educator Dan Domenech first partnered with MS 45 in the Bronx, he realized that what the school needed most was a class of volunteers as diverse as its students. Over the past two years, he and Director of EEO & Diversity Initiatives Ivy Latimer have met that demand by rallying their colleagues in The McGraw-Hill Companies’ Hispanic Heritage Network (HHN) to support their partnership with Principal Anna Giordano and MS 45, whose student population is 70 percent Hispanic.

Today, a team of twenty HHN members supports an array of student opportunities at MS 45. Earlier this month, The McGraw-Hill Companies’ Legal Department collaborated with HHN and BEAM (Black Employees at McGraw-Hill) to participate in a mock trial session involving students in the school's Law Academy, and hosted a field trip for the students to The McGraw-Hill Companies’ corporate offices. This year, the Corporation’s employees have also hosted student at BusinessWeek magazine, participated in MS 45's 18th Annual Read Aloud Day and will roll up their sleeves at the school's Garden Project later this month.

Supporting Leading Hispanic Organizations

100 Hispanic Women

Twelve Hispanics Heritage Network members attended the 100 Hispanic Women 11th Annual Gala in New York City on May 10, 2007. 100 Hispanic Women is a non-profit, non-partisan women's organization with members from a wide range of industries and interests. As an organization of dynamic and accomplished leaders, 100 Hispanic Women strives to eliminate obstacles and encourage Latinas to be innovative, maximize their potential, create strategic partnerships, promote inclusion in government and corporate America, and improve the status of Hispanics. The McGraw-Hill Companies is proud to sponsor the organization's Young Latina Leadership Institute through internship opportunities annually.

Hispanic Federations Annual Gala

Several Hispanic Heritage Network members attended the Hispanic Federation's Annual Gala on May 2, 2007 in New York City. The Hispanic Federation was established in 1990 by a group of Hispanic leaders to bring together 90 Latino health and human services agencies from Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. The Hispanic Federation's member agencies work in the areas of education, health, elderly services, child care, HIV/AIDS, housing and economic development. Each year, theses agencies serve more than 1 million of the northeast region's most underprivileged and vulnerable Latinos. Since its inception, the Hispanic Federation's mission has remained the same: better meet the growing needs of the Hispanic community, to obtain a fair share of resources, and to help its member agencies to secure new resources.
