Volunteerism
"S&P helped me learn what 'giving back' was through the volunteer day and that I could do so much more than one day a year. Thanks for giving me the push I needed." –Karin Steube-Vollrath, employee
At The McGraw-Hill Companies, our offices and facilities can be found worldwide in large cities and small towns. Grateful to these communities for giving us the resources on which we thrive, the corporation works to improve the places where we operate.
Our employees relish the opportunity to go out into the community and work in a hands-on capacity, so we have developed a robust set of volunteer opportunities for employees worldwide.
To bring together employees and their communities worldwide, The McGraw-Hill Companies created an annual Global Volunteer Day, which includes thousands of employees across almost every time zone working on dozens and dozens of individual community projects. Our Employee Volunteer Grant program supports local organizations where employees devote their time and energy. Employees dedicating more than 50 hours in a year are eligible to apply on behalf of their favorite non-profit group. Our Volunteer Team Service Grant encourages employees to come together to create their own service projects and provides recipient organizations with $1,500 grants to cover expenses related to these projects.
In recognition of our employee volunteer efforts, The McGraw-Hill Companies was honored with the prestigious 2007 Award for Excellence in Workplace Volunteer Programs by the Points of Light Foundation. Former President George H. W. Bush presented the award to our Chairman, President and CEO, Harold McGraw III, at a ceremony in July 2007.
We have cultivated a strong network of community service teams across the company and around the globe. Highlights include:
- Community Partners/UK Community Engagement Committee, which partners with a local school, organizes blood, suit and coat drives through the year, and takes part in the annual dragon boat race for charity.
- Polaris Activities Committee in Columbus, OH, which organizes a number of employee volunteer projects throughout the year and has received the Outstanding Community Partner Award from the Coalition on Housing and Homelessness for its ongoing efforts on behalf of the organization.
- CTB CARE team in Monterey, CA, which aligns cash contributions with employee-driven volunteer projects, to support local non-profits such as the Monterey Museum of Art, the Boys and Girls Club and the American Cancer Society
- Hightstown Employee Activities Team (H.E.A.T.) in Hightstown, NJ, which regularly offers employees the opportunity to volunteer for organizations like the Children's Home Society of New Jersey, the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Family Guidance Center.
- The Houston, TX Platts Outreach/Activities Team, which has a longstanding relationship with the Houston READ Commission, has participated in reading initiatives and regularly partners with local schools during Global Volunteer Day.
