Work/Life
At The McGraw-Hill Companies, a fulfilling life outside the office is not at odds with a healthy work ethic. In fact, the two are complementary.
We operate on the belief that if an employee feels personally fulfilled, rested, and generally happy, he or she will be better equipped to tackle the work day.
Our employees are mothers, fathers, sons, daughters. They are volunteers, sports coaches, mountain climbers, and artists. We offer flexible work arrangements; child care – including sick care, discounted before and after school care and holiday and summer care; back-up dependent care; eldercare case management; an extensive suite of higher education planning tools and resources; and maternity, adoption and paternity leave—including a new paternity leave policy that allows new Dads to take three paid weeks of leave. Confidential counseling and child- and elder-care referral services are also available. In addition, employees can access information, news and articles about relationships, health and wellness, workplace issues, depression and other illnesses through a special website.
We strive to provide employees with non-traditional schedule arrangements — including flex-time, job sharing and telecommuting — where the best interests of the Corporation and the employee are served.
We also assist our workforce if they choose to have children. In this section you can learn more about our adoption initiatives and other programs for working parents. Also for individuals with aging parents – we offer elder care case management, backup dependent care, elder care resource and referral, matching FSA funds for dependent care, healthcare benefits for one adult family member.
As an information services provider, we place a strong emphasis on continuing education and training for employees. In addition to more traditional classes, we’ve periodically organized Lunch and Learn sessions, which make the lunch break a time for enrichment and group interaction.
We strive to instill trust and company pride in our staff. We earn this trust from the way we treat our employees, and the fact that we view them as human beings, not just workers. Further, we take an interest in who they are after the work day ends (and before it begins).
"Every morning I leave for work at 7:30 am, before my daughter wakes up. Because I am working from home every Thursday, I get the chance to have one day every week when I can get her ready: brush teeth together, comb her hair, make her pony tails, choose together the dress she wants to wear, etc. I also go to school with her, and talk with the teachers, or schedule the occasional doctor appointment in the morning, without missing work. My daughter grows up so fast, and I am grateful to have my telecommuting agreement. It gives me time together with her every week, to do things that I couldn't do otherwise. Thank you." -- Employee feedback on Work/Life programs
