The retired chairman and chief executive officer of Lockheed Martin Corporation, Norman R. Augustine, remains very active in both business and philanthropic pursuits. He recently chaired the National Academies Committee on Prospering in the Global Economy, which produced the highly acclaimed report, Rising Above the Gathering Storm.
Augustine joined Douglas Aircraft Company in 1958. In 1970 he joined LTV Missiles and Space Company, and in 1977 assumed the role of chairman, chief executive officer, president and chief operating officer of Martin Marietta Corporation. The company was later known as Lockheed Martin Corporation and upon its formation in 1995, Augustine was named president. A year later he became its chief executive officer and later chairman.
Government service has also been a part of Augustine's career. He held a number of positions in the U.S. Department of Defense's Office of the Secretary, including assistant director of defense research and engineering, assistant secretary, under secretary and acting secretary of the U.S. Army.
Augustine is a member of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, the advisory board to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the American Philosophical Society, the Council on Foreign Affairs, and is a fellow of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a member of the board of trustees of Colonial Williamsburg, a trustee emeritus of Johns Hopkins University, and a member of the boards of ConocoPhillips, Black & Decker and Procter & Gamble.
Augustine is a former member of the board of trustees of Princeton and MIT, and served as lecturer with the rank of professor at Princeton University's School of Engineering and Applied Science. Augustine served as chairman and principal officer of the American Red Cross, the National Academy of Engineering, the Association of the United States Army, the Aerospace Industries Association, the Defense Science Board and the Business Roundtable Task Force on Education. He is a former president of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Hart/Rudman Commission on National Security.
The President of the United States presented Augustine with the National Medal of Technology. Five times he was awarded the U.S. Department of Defense's highest civilian decoration, the Distinguished Service Medal; and has received the Joint Chiefs of Staff Distinguished Public Service Award. He is co-author of The Defense Revolution and Shakespeare In Charge, and author of Augustine's Laws and Augustine's Travels.
Augustine was raised in Colorado and attended Princeton University where he graduated with a bachelors of science degree in aeronautical engineering, magna cum laude, and a masters of science degree in engineering. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Xi.
