D. Edward (Ted) Smyth is Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs and Executive Assistant to Harold (Terry) McGraw III, the chairman, president and chief executive officer of The McGraw-Hill Companies. He is responsible for worldwide marketing, communications, government affairs and community relations activities, and advises the chairman on matters involving the Board of Directors and the management and operation of the Corporation.
Before joining the McGraw-Hill Companies in 2009, Ted was Chief Administrative Officer and Senior Vice President at the H.J. Heinz Company, where he was responsible for human resources, corporate and government affairs, and global crisis management. During his 20 years at Heinz, the company expanded rapidly in overseas markets such as India, China, Russia, Spain and Indonesia. Ted was chairman of Heinz's Global Communication Council, Head of Crisis Management and a member of the Office of the Chairman.
Ted joined Heinz in March 1988 following a 15-year career as a senior Irish diplomat. He represented Ireland in the United States, United Kingdom and Portugal, and was a delegate to the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) in Geneva. He was also an advisor to the Irish Prime Minister on the Northern Ireland peace process. He has published articles on public policy and speaks regularly at conferences in the United States and Europe.
Ted is an honors graduate in History and Political Science from Trinity College, Dublin. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the United States Council for International Business, a Director of the Ireland Funds and Glucksman Ireland House at New York University, a member of the Global Studies Program of the Center for International Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, a trustee of the Clinton Institute in University College, Dublin and a former Director of the Hain Celestial Company.
