Life at McGraw-Hill: Corporate Responsibility

Smarter, Better World

cr-100-best-logo.jpg

It's our mission to help create a smarter, better world. To get to the 'better,' we've realized that we have to be 'smarter,' in terms of both efficiency, and the conservation of materials and energy. And we're proud that we've been recognized for our efforts by a number of publications and groups.

Now, we're looking for the next generation of employees who will take us to the next level. And the next level of smart is helping to build a greener global economy. We're doing this by using our expertise to provide critical information and analysis to the marketplace about green industries and investing, as well as developing digital, ecologically-friendly products.

Building a Greener Global Economy

Standard & Poor's is providing investors with ways to balance investment potential with environmental responsibility with benchmarks such as the S&P Global Eco Index, S&P Global Clean Energy Index, and the S&P U.S. Carbon Efficient Index.

McGraw-Hill Education is teaching sustainability through its materials and digitalizing education by leading the transition from books to bytes. About 95 percent of our currently available college textbooks are offered in digital form.

Through products ranging from GreenSource Magazine to the Sweets Green Collection, McGraw-Hill Construction is helping lead the industry toward an era of more energy efficient commercial and residential buildings.

Platts and AviationWeek provide information on the clean energy, defense and aviation industries, while J.D. Power and Associates demonstrates to businesses what their customer's attitudes are towards the environment and sustainability.

Volunteerism and Green Teams

What's the phrase? "Think Globally, Act Locally?" We like to do the reverse.

  • Thinking Locally. On the home front, many of our offices have self-identified "Green Teams," comprised of enterprising employees who work with building services to provide more efficient recycling, energy use, and educate employees about green issues on the local level.
  • Acting Globally. Worldwide, we support and encourage volunteer efforts at all of our locations. Wherever we have employees, the spirit of Global Volunteer Day (GVD) is strong. Last year, 220 teams and 4500 volunteers participated in the corporation's annual GVD, engaging volunteers and community organizations in ongoing and strategic relationships worldwide. See videos of our volunteer teams all around the world! [link to video page]
  • Giving it Up. Our giving programs take on a variety of forms, including direct grants, in-kind giving, employee matching gifts and volunteerism. We match 1-for-1 employee contributions to a range of causes. The Corporation also conducts an annual Employee Giving Campaign, which supports health and human service nonprofits. And when international or local disasters occur - the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile come to mind - The McGraw-Hill Companies matches donations to institutions like the Red Cross who support aid and rebuilding efforts.

Recognition

In 2009 The McGraw-Hill Companies was recognized by several organizations for its Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability practices. Among other awards, we were:

  • Listed in the 2009 CSR Index 50 by the Boston College Corporate Citizenship and Reputation Institute as on of the top 50 companies that earned the highest ratings in a public survey of corporate reputation.
  • Listed again in the FTSE4Good Index Series Review which tracks the performance of companies meeting corporate responsibility standards.
