Giving Overview
Through our efforts to become a trusted and contributing member in communities worldwide, we in turn foster trust and loyalty in our products and services. Our giving programs take on a variety of shapes, including direct grants, in-kind giving, employee matching gifts and volunteerism.
Direct Grants
McGraw-Hill focuses its charitable efforts on its goal of financial capability for all. The Corporation partners with nonprofit organizations to help individuals gain the necessary knowledge to make smart savings, credit and spending decisions.
McGraw-Hill also extends its support to organizations that share the Corporation’s dedication to the arts and culture, education and health and human services. For instance, in 2011, we launched a citywide book amnesty program in partnership with The New York Public Library and underwritten by McGraw-Hill, which made it possible for 8,700 young adults to return to the library. Other major strategic grant recipients include, but are not limited to:
- Financial Women’s Association
- Lawyers Committee For Civil Rights Under the Law
- The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center
- National Organization on Disability
- The Prince’s Trust UK
- Career Academies UK
In-Kind Giving
The Corporation contributed close to $19 million through its in-kind giving in 2011, which includes donations through the McGraw-Hill Education Book Donation program and the donation of broadcast time and print advertising space for public service announcements. McGraw-Hill Education donates books to various nonprofit organizations to encourage educational development globally.
Matching Gift Programs
For every dollar our employees donate to eligible nonprofits, we match it one-for-one through our matching gift programs. Our year-round matching gift program supports arts and education organizations and our annual Employee Giving Campaign matches employee contributions to health and human service nonprofits. In 2011, close to $1.75 million in employee and matching donations combined was donated to about 1,400 nonprofits through our matching gift program.
Additionally, our disaster relief matching gift program matches employee contributions to support disaster relief efforts. In 2011, employees from around the world raised more than $300,000 (including McGraw-Hill’s matching contribution) for devastating disasters like the Japan tsunami and earthquake and the East African Food Crisis.
